Warehouse TERRADA to Open WHAT CAFE Art Cafe in Tennoz

- Combining gallery with cafe, this new space supports up-and-coming artists in the industry -

Warehouse TERRADA will open the WHAT CAFE art cafe on October 15th, 2020 (Thu) as part of our business expansion of art and culture.

Mainly focusing on the storage of art works, we have been developing a wide range of art-related businesses including artwork restoration, packaging, transportation, and exhibitions to pass on the passion of artists and the intrinsic value of art to future generations. WHAT CAFE is a space for promoting art and culture that aims to support up-and-coming artists in the industry. This art space is a combination of a gallery and a cafe, boasting a floor space of 800 square meters (or around 8,611 square feet). Visitors can enjoy meals and drinks while appreciating and purchasing artworks by up-and-coming artists proactive in the Japanese art industry. The selection of works on display is constantly changing, giving as many artists as possible the opportunity to showcase and sell their work, and also giving visitors the chance to discover many different artworks throughout the year. With WHAT CAFE, we hope to provide a cafe space for art where people can see and experience a range of artworks that can be purchased for a reasonable price—mostly ranging between 50,000 yen and 200,000 yen—thereby providing the opportunity to further enrich their lifestyles with these one-of-a-kind pieces.

Through running facilities that promote art and culture, such as the art materials lab PIGMENT TOKYO and TERRADA ART COMPLEX, Japan’s largest gallery complex, Warehouse TERRADA has been working to turn Tennoz into a major center for the arts. Our new WHAT facility, a collectors’ museum of contemporary art that is due to open on December 12th, and WHAT CAFE have both been selected as the first private-sector facilities to be certified as cultural tourism centers by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Japan Tourism Agency based on its concept which has been focusing on promoting knowledge and invigorating local cultural tourism. Going forward, our goal is to create exhibition spaces that not only serve the main stakeholders of contemporary art such as artists, collectors and galleries, but that also open up contemporary artworks to broader fan bases and help revitalize the market for art in Japan.
