Warehouse TERRADA to Hold Exhibition by Plaster Craftsman, Syuhei Hasado

An artisan of Japan's traditional sakan plasterwork architectural techniques who was involved in the backdrop to the title card for NHK's Taiga drama television series Sanada Maru, a hotel entrance and other works

Warehouse TERRADA will host the special exhibition "Falling upon the soil" by plaster craftsman Syuhei Hasado from January 21st (Sat) to February 14th (Tue), 2023, at one of our event venues.
The exhibition will focus on Japan's traditional sakan plasterwork architectural techniques and express its aesthetic linked with nature, including earth, water, and light. As well as new works for the exhibition, the floor of the 500-square-meter venue will be covered in a layer of soil to show Hasado's perspective like no other. Visitors will see his continuous breakthroughs and experience where he is now.

Tennoz, Tokyo was a sandbar area until the Edo period(around 1600 to 1868).
After the reclamation work at around the end of the Taisho period (circa 1925), the area became a logistics center lined with factories and warehouses and supported Japan’s postwar reconstruction.
Warehouse TERRADA, based in Tennoz for more than 70 years, has stored our clients’ artworks, wine, valuables and other precious items. The memory of Tennoz consists of not only accumulated sand and earth during its long history but also people’s emotions stored in their items in the warehouses. As a culture-creating company, it is a wish rooted in our mission to make the flower of culture bloom beautifully, caring for the memory of the area.
The artisan of Japan’s traditional sakan plasterwork who raised its technique to an art form, Syuhei Hasado, is also trying to focus on people’s roots through the earth. We empathize with his emotion and decided to have a special exhibition in our venue.

In order to express the aesthetic linked with nature, including earth, water, and light, in our warehouse facility among the buildings in Tennoz, Hasado’s works, including several new ones, will be exhibited. In addition, the venue will be laid with earth to express his perspective of the world. We will provide opportunities where visitors can feel familiar with the earth in a big city, reinterpret its relationship, and consider the history and the future.

We continue to support Japanese traditional techniques to be passed onto the future, hand down our local history, and contribute to the development of Tennoz as an international art capital.
