TERRADA ART AWARD 2025 Entries Open on November 20th to Support Emerging Artists
Messages from the 11 jury members to applicants unveiled
Warehouse TERRADA opened its entries from November 20th (Wed), 2024, for TERRADA ART AWARD 2025, recognizing talented creators of contemporary art. Messages from the jury to the artists who will enter the award and additional prizes for the finalists were announced.
TERRADA ART AWARD 2025 is a contemporary art award designed to support emerging artists. To discover artists who can play an active role on the world stage, we have selected a jury panel with an international perspective and a deep understanding of contemporary art.
On November 20th (Wed), 2024, we opened entries and announced messages from the jury to the artists.
Each of the selected finalists will be able to exhibit the works at the finalist exhibition and receive 3 million yen as a production support prize. We are also pleased to announce that each finalist will be awarded several additional prizes, such as “Ruinart Blanc de Blancs” by an award sponsor MHD Moët Hennessy Diageo K.K.; a research and report grant up to 300,000 yen for the artist’s next creation following the AWARD; 100,000 yen worth of art supplies at PIGMENT TOKYO, which offers superior-quality art materials and supports artists’ creativity; and two years of complimentary use of our art storage service, equipped with optimal temperature, humidity, and security for artworks.
We want to foster a society in which artists can thrive. Through TERRADA ART AWARD, we fully support the careers of our finalists—artists with the potential to drive the arts forward into the future—as they venture out into the world, break conventions, and discover their raison d’être.
[Message from the final jury] (In Japanese alphabetical order)
Takahiro Kaneshima (Associate professor of SCAPe, Kanazawa College of Art)
I am very excited that TERRADA ART AWARD, characterized by its unique judging system, will be held again. Looking back at the past winning artists and their works, I feel that TERRADA ART AWARD has provided an opportunity to develop works that not only show a strong sense of artistry, but that have also led to a breakthrough in their careers or works that they have been developing but have been unable to produce due to various circumstances. I hope that you will take advantage of this great opportunity and challenge TERRADA ART AWARD by developing the motivations you wish to express in your artwork while dealing with today’s changing society and values.
Yukie Kamiya (Art Critic, Independent Curator)
Artists have made various attempts through their artistic expression as a means of questioning the world in which we live. In this way, we overcame boundaries and walls, however, now many other cracks and imbalances arise due to new divisions and conflicts. With new perspectives, how can we expand and connect the world, which is becoming increasingly introversive? This award is an opportunity to support new talents who are trying to embark for the broader world. Please show us your artistic challenge.
Yuki Terase (Art Intelligence Global Founding Partner)
It is with a great pleasure to witness TERRADA ART AWARD becoming one of the most prominent awards for young artists in Japan. I am also impressed with the activities of the past award winners that are often extending beyond Japan. In many ways, this is an opportunity that can be a turning point in your career. I look forward to receiving your unique narrative, a work that only you can create.
Daito Manabe (Artist, programmer, and composer)
As we move from the age of reproduction to the age of creation, and as what was once imagined becomes reality, the role of art is expanding. Given this historical background, I look forward to the appearance of works that foresee the near future, and to encountering works that present a vision of the future of society and culture. I anticipate creativity and innovation from all of you.
Meruro Washida (Director of Towada Art Center, Associate professor of Tokyo University of the Arts)
Before being an artist, what I want to see as a person is artworks that are affected by the gravity of life-works that I may not be able to understand, but that can convince me that they simply couldn’t be anything other than that.
[Message from the primary selection jury] (In Japanese alphabetical order))
Ryo Ikeshiro (Artist, musician, researcher, Assistant Professor, School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong)
In my previous message to applicants two years ago, I noted how we were living in unprecedented times of uncertainty, conflict and climate emergency. The situation somehow appears to be persisting and even deteriorating. So we continue to question ourselves. What is it that shapes us, as beings and as those involved in art and culture? When almost anything can be generated by AI which is becoming increasingly pervasive but leaves many problems unsolved, what can we actually do and what can we express? I look forward to seeing a wide range of portfolios from the applicants.
Shinji Ohmaki (Artist)
Following on from the previous, I am in charge of the first round screening.
There are many points to judge, such as whether or not the work is able to overlap artist’s own background, whether or not it is unique, and whether or not you feel that it has the potential to continue creating it in the future.
We hope to see artworks that make us want to see them in person.
Eriko Kimura (Director at Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art)
What is interesting about TERRADA ART AWARD is that it is an opportunity to experience both the production experience of facing a wide, high ceiling space and producing everything from planning to realization of the exhibition, and the experience of having your artwork seen by many people at once and being accepted by a wide range of audiences due to the high attention the award gets.
I look forward to seeing challenging works that will utilize your own experience and style, while aiming for a further breakthrough.
Ryutaro Takahashi (Psychiatrist, Art Collector)
Works that brush the surface of the era are highly praised in the art market. However, I am looking forward to works that will not be consumed in the blink of an eye, but rather that will turn the era inside out.
Yuu Takehisa (Curator, Artistic Director of Contemporary Art Center, Art Tower Mito)
TERRADA ART AWARD is open to young and mid-career artists working in diverse fields of expression, and is a valuable opportunity for finalists to create new works with the funds provided for their production, and present them to a large number of audiences. I am looking forward to seeing the plans that are well thought out for this award, which attracted many audiences last time, finding out why you create this work now, and where the uniqueness of your own expression lies.
Reiko Tsubaki (Curator, the Mori Art Museum)
Art has existed since ancient times and is capable of a truly wide variety of expressions. It is also a medium that has documented numerous natural disasters, pandemics, and wars, etc. It is an interesting time when technologies such as AI are being featured, while at the same time, ideas and methods from before modern civilization are also gaining attention. I would like to see what you truly want to create and express in this era.
