WHAT MUSEUM to Hold “The lens within your heart” from the TAKEUCHI COLLECTION from September 30th (Sat), 2023
The Collectors’ Museum of Contemporary Art, WHAT MUSEUM, operated by Warehouse TERRADA, will hold an exhibition titled “The lens within your heart” from the TAKEUCHI COLLECTION from September 30th (Sat), 2023 to February 25th (Sun), 2024. This exhibition will focus on the collection of Shin Takeuchi, a well respected figure in the IT industry, featuring approximately 33 contemporary artworks and 34 pieces of furniture designed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and others.
The TAKEUCHI COLLECTION is a private collection of contemporary art and furniture collected over the past five years by Shin Takeuchi, Director and CTO, Visional, Inc., an IT specialist at the forefront of the industry. The collection consists of a wide range of artworks by artists emblematic of their eras, such as Yves Klein and Gerhard Richter, as well as those of eminent contemporary artists, including Wilhelm Sasnal, Jadé Fadojutimi, Izumi Kato, and Enrico Isamu Oyama.
The exhibition features nearly 33 artworks, ranging from a work by Pablo Picasso, which inspired Takeuchi to start art collecting, to works by Yves Klein and Gerhard Richter, the artists emblematic of their respective eras, as well as abstract paintings that have captivated the collector in recent years. The exhibition also features furniture designed by architects such as Le Corbusier, one of the masters of modern architecture. There will also be a space provided exclusively for visitors to lounge on Charlotte Perriand’s chairs to appreciate the artworks, just as Takeuchi does regularly to enjoy the harmony of furniture and art. An installation consisting of approximately 20 chairs designed by Pierre Jeanneret invites visitors to appreciate the features of each chair from different angles.
This exhibition offers an opportunity to discover new charms of the works and the delight of collecting art, through a glimpse into the present state of the TAKEUCHI COLLECTION, which continues to grow and transform. Some related events will also be held during the exhibition, the details of which will be announced soon.
– Collector’s Note (excerpt) by Shin Takeuchi
Whenever I look at abstract art, I always contemplate why artists create such works as a result of viewing the world through the lens of their heart, although we all live in the same world and experience similar things through sight and hearing. I cannot help but wonder what their lens, shaped through their life, may look like. However, the lenses in my imagination can only be guesses based on my experiences, which might also be incorrect. If you are here today with someone to see this exhibition, I invite you to look at the artworks together and discuss what the lenses in the artists’ hearts may look like. In a way, this activity is like disclosing the lens in your own heart, which I believe will bring you even closer to each other.

– Comments by Christel Takigawa
This is truly a special opportunity to see the works of a collector that is not usually on public display. I am thrilled not only to be reunited with the International Klein Blue (IKB) by Yves Klein, but also the furniture by Le Corbusier’s co-architects exhibited with it. Though this is my first experience as a navigator for the audio guide, I will devote myself to navigating the visitors with the utmost sincerity.

[About WHAT MUSEUM]
WHAT MUSEUM, collectors‘ museum of contemporary art, opened in Tennoz, Tokyo in December 2020. The Museum’s core work is to make the precious works of art properties that collectors and artists have entrusted to us accessible to the public. We have used our unique insight as a warehousing company to explore the concept of what an art facility should be. The result is to open up the warehouse to offer the public a look at art that they would not ordinarily have the opportunity to see. The museum exhibits works by artists active in the contemporary art scene side-by-side with the thoughts of the collectors as well as the artists, offering an innovative space for the appreciation of art. The name of WHAT (WAREHOUSE OF ART TERRADA) implies the cultural value which is gleaming quietly in the warehouse, and the museum exhibits two- and three-dimensional works as well as architectural models, photographs, movies, literature and installations. We plan and exhibit these diversified arts and cultures in our individual style of a museum as a warehouse company in new and unique approaches.
