Tennoz Area Designated as Tokyo’s First Projection Mapping Utilization District
We are pleased to announce that Tennoz Canalside Revitalization Association in which Warehouse TERRADA is a participant, applied for the “projection mapping utilization districts” appointed by the Governor of Tokyo, and the applicable district was selected as the “Tennoz Projection Mapping Utilization District” on December 10th, 2020.
Serving as Warehouse TERRADA’s base of operations and located next to the historic Shinagawajuku, which in itself a prominent site in Edo culture, the Tennoz area has attracted attention for its mix of the traditional and modern. It is a unique location where one can experience contemporary art in a waterfront environment, and the number of visitors has been increasing every year. Our company started participating in the Tennoz Canalside Revitalization Association in order to revitalize the area, and have been working on revitalization efforts that focus on art, and making use of projection mapping.
Up until recently, when utilizing projection mapping in the area, we were limited to using projection mapping on a temporary basis for regional events, or restricted to the projection mapping area of up to 100㎡. Now that the area has been designated as a utilization district, on specialized wall surfaces, the Tennoz Canalside Revitalization Association has become the primary managing and issuing body for projection mapping for the district, and can now conduct projection mapping at a scope in excess of the previous maximum projection area of 100㎡.
We can further utilize the revenue made through projected advertisements to further fund regional activity, and we can develop a more sustainable regional revitalization model. Our company will continue working with the Tennoz Canalside Revitalization Association, and will promote regional revitalization by turning the Tennoz district into an area symbolic for the creation of new artistic expressions. Please see the following for details.
[Overview of Tokyo Projection Mapping Utilization Districts]
In recent years, the technological advancement of “projection mapping,” which projects lights onto targets such as buildings, has been nothing short of remarkable, and is expected to help vitalize and sharpen the appeal of the various towns in the prefecture of Tokyo. Following the amendment of the Tokyo Outside Advertising Regulations, the use of projection mapping in advertising is now stipulated by law.
In the prefecture of Tokyo, in order to utilize projection mapping in a manner that accommodates the unique traits of each region, the Governor may designate an area as a projection mapping utilization district in response to an application by parties such as town-building organizations, and “Projection Mapping Utilization District Designation Standards” have been enacted to help facilitate the process.
