The summer of art has arrived

Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2018

What’s a good place to go this summer? If you’re still deciding, let us recommend Echigo-Tsumari in Niigata Prefecture. This year the region will host the seventh Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, a nature-based art festival that has been held every three years since 2000. Cutting-edge artworks will appear amid the lush green mountains and the gorge with its beautiful terraced rice fields and rivers.

0710_2The vast sky and mountains are part of the exhibitions. The Kiyotsukyo Keikoku Tunnel, built in 1996 for viewing the Kiyotsu Gorge, was renovated by Chinese architectural firm MAD Architects and turned into an installation that reflects the water and surrounding nature to create a whole new landscape. Yukihisa Isobe, who has been doing fieldwork in the area for twenty years, will unveil a new work that represents the flow of water through the underground pipes used for hydroelectric power. In the Kawanishi area, YATOO, the Korean Nature Artists’ Association, will produce nature art by ten artists from eight countries.

With a declining and aging population, closed schools and vacant houses can be spotted throughout the Echigo-Tsumari region, but the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field gives these structures new life through art. Christian Boltanski created an installation from a closed school building, while Lee Bul made her work in a vacant house that once used as a clinic and residential units. This format allows visitors to be enveloped by art as they wander through the buildings and houses. New works will be added to the popular attractions from previous Art Festival. The maze-like atmosphere will be given even greater depth.

Delivery of the works is supported by TERRADA ART ASSIST. This service plays the role of protecting the delicate artworks so that visitors can fully enjoy their experience in the field. As part of the convenient Official Tour, visitors can sample a menu supervised by Fumio Yonezawa, chef de cuisine of the Michelin-starred Jean-Georges Tokyo. It will be a summer vacation filled with art for the whole family.
