The perfect introduction to Sicilian wine

Blessed with a warm climate, Sicily has been a center of viniculture for centuries. Sicilian wine is in high demand, and it was once one of the largest wine producing regions in Europe. It is home to many native grape varieties, with standouts such as Inzolia, Grillo (white), Nero d’Avola, and Frappato (red). In recent years the wine produced in Etna has earned worldwide acclaim for its sophistication and elegance.

Wine has been made in Sicily for ages, but much of it was “reasonably good” wine for general consumption. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Sicily became recognized as a premium wine producer. And that is thanks to Planeta.

Planeta was launched by Diego Planeta, who for years served as the president of Settesoli, a major Sicilian wine cooperative. He started his winery with the hopes of developing Sicily’s economy. Its Chardonnay 1995, made using international varieties of chardonnay harvested in Diego’s own vineyard, earned great acclaim in the global market, launching Planeta onto the world stage. Today Planeta has wineries in regions all over Sicily, from its home Menfi to Vittoria, Noto, Etna, and Milazzo, each producing wines that reflect the distinctive characteristics of their respective soils. Planeta’s wines give you a better understanding of each terroir, which makes it a useful textbook for those who wish to learn more about Italian wine.

Another reason to recommend Planeta is its sophisticated style. It sells beautifully-packaged olive oil made from its own olives and runs a boutique hotel in Menfi called La Foresteria that serves amazing meals, just two of the winery’s inroads into gastronomy and wine tourism. This has created numerous jobs in the region and realized the founder’s goal of contributing to the Sicilian economy. Love wines crafted with love for their home regions tell the story of their terroir’s glories. The Planeta wines gently express the wonders of Sicily to all who drink them.
