Koshu City Katsunuma Grape Festival

Savor the allure of Japanese wines

Wine festivals are held throughout Japan every autumn, each giving visitors a feel for the uniqueness of its region. But true wine lovers know the festival they can’t miss is the Koshu City Katsunuma Grape Festival, which treats visitors to fine wines and grapes while offering thanks for the grape harvest. This year’s festival will be held on October 7 at Katsunuma Central Park Square in Katsunuma-budokyo. Just purchase a tasting glass for 1,000 yen and you can tour the booths set up by Koshu city wineries and sample all they have to offer. There is also a “wine service tent” that offers tastings free of charge. The festival attracts a huge crowd each year, and it also gives visitors a special opportunity to try Katsunuma’s unique fruits and regional dishes.

DSCN9103What keeps crowds coming back to the Koshu City Katsunuma Grape Festival year after year is the exceptional quality of the participating wineries. The list begins with the Japan-leading and world-renowned Chateau Mercian, Chuo Budoshu (Grace Wine), and Marufuji Winery, and continues with houses such as Haramo Wine and Kurambon Wine that are breathing new life into Japanese wine, along with established favorites including Katsunuma Winery, Manns Wine, Grande Polaire Katsunuma Winery, and Huggy Wine.

All in all, Katsunuma is the region that’s leading Japanese winemaking, producing wine after wine worthy of showing off to the world. Having all of these top-class wineries together in one place as well as the ability to sample so many famous wines makes this a wine lover’s paradise. You will encounter the unique flavors of the Koshu and Muscat Bailey A varieties unique to Japan, as well as international varieties such as Chardonnay and Merlot that reflect the terroir of Katsunuma, giving a real taste of how far today’s Japanese wine scene has come. If you love wine, you’ll surely get hooked on the richness and depth of Japanese wine. The festival is just an hour’s train ride from Tokyo, making it the perfect autumn excursion.
