Georges Braque: Métamorphoses

Three-dimensional creations from a cubist painter

0511_01

Georges Braque, along with Picasso, was one of the founders of cubism. In addition to his paintings, he produced three-dimensional objects with charming bird and fish motifs. These works include precious stones and jewelry that André Malraux, former French Minister of Cultural Affairs, declared to be “Braque’s apotheosis,” and a special exhibition will bring them to Japan.

0511_2Braque, who died in 1963, produced a series he called Métamorphoses late in his life. The title refers to change, and these works are themed around mythological stories of transformation, such as gods that change into birds. It includes a wide range of genres, with paintings in addition to jewelry and other objects.

The exhibition begins with paintings outside the Métamorphoses series, including Le parc Monceau, which is said to be his earliest existing work. The Métamorphoses section starts with paintings such as the Les oiseaux bleus, hommage à Picasso, his final work. The ceramic works section features an array of plates, pitchers, decorative sculptures, and vases, including a pitcher depicting the Greek goddess Perséphone. On display in the jewelry section are brooches, rings, and other pieces Braque produced in collaboration with the jewelry maker Heger de Loewenfeld. Braque wanted his jewelry to give tactile pleasure in addition to visual. Incorporating diamonds, turquoise, gold, and other fine elements, Braque’s jewelry exemplifies his whole essence. The vibrantly colored stained glass and other indoor decorations are also not to be missed. As a young boy, Braque trained as a decorative painter with the intention of taking over his family business.

This exhibition will serve as Japan’s first official introduction to the Métamorphoses series. Here’s hoping that many more people will learn about Braque’s world.
