A Gaze into Architecture: Phases of Contemporary Photography and Architecture

Architectural discoveries through photographs

0828_1

Architectural photography typically concerns photographic records taken for the purpose of clarifying the design or composition of a building, much like drawings. However, in recent years photographs taken of architecture have been seen as a means of artistic expression. This exhibition, entitled “A Gaze into Architecture: Phases of Contemporary Photography and Architecture,” explores the complex relationship between architecture and photography through works by thirteen individuals from Japan and other countries. It will be held as a special exhibition by ARCHI- DEPOT Museum, which is operated by Warehouse TERRADA.

0828_2Each of the featured artists displays unique forms of expression. Thomas Demand crafts full-size paper models based on press photographs and other sources, and the huge prints he makes of them have earned him attention. Naoya Hatanaka has produced numerous works that deal with the relationship between nature and humans through architecture and civil engineering. Candida Höfer is a photographer from the Becher School. She captures architectural spaces with a cool and realistic perspective that strongly resembles the methods of Mr. and Ms. Becher, who photographed and collected water towers and other structures as if they were specimens.

The subjects represent thirteen famous buildings in Japan and other countries, ranging from masterpieces of modernism such as Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Villa Tugendhat to Herzog & de Meuron’s Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg. The physical experiences and internal aspects the thirteen artists gained from each structureare reflected in their works, through which entirely new spaces are formed.
