Keeping legends and culture of Noto to the future

Oku-Noto Triennale 2017

塩田千春

The art festivals taking place in various regions of Japan can be good opportunities to rediscover the rich nature and culture of those places. “Oku-Noto Triennale 2017” takes place in Suzu City, located at the tip of Noto Archipelago, and gathers 39 artists and groups from 11 countries.

石川直樹The traditional culture and rituals related to the ocean strongly remain in the city, where the artists found their own motifs to incorporate into their productions: Chiharu Shiota creates installation based on the anecdotes surrounding traditional Agehama sea-salt making process, which is no longer performed in other regions of the country; Takafumi Fukasawa makes “Continuation of Myth” based on the local mythology of gods who were represented by or related to animals or things washed ashore from the other side of the sea. Artists such as Eko Nuguroho, Tobias Rehberger and Gimhongsok install their works in the former train cars, stations and the surrounding area of Noto Tetsudo Corporation’s Noto Line, which was terminated in 2005. EAT & ART TARO, who has been conducting food-based projects, creates a cabaret which seems under construction, where the visitors are offered with food and drink at night. Other venues such as former boathouse, storage and repairing room for fishing nets, closed school and shops will also be the venues for the festival.

Many of the works will be installed near the sea, and during the festival various art performances as well as the traditional and sacred Kiriko Festival will also be held. This fall, one of the remotest region in Japan will be the place to experience the cutting-edge art and culture this summer.
