GRAND PROJECTS: HOW FAR WILL YOU GO?

Records of creators trying on the grand-scale projects

unspecified

Christo and Jeanne-Claude made temporary floating piers across Lake Iseo in Italy. The vivid orange piers, on which visitors can walk, connected towns, shores and the island in the middle of the lake. The original plan was conceived in 1970; they first thought of making floating piers in Odaiba, Tokyo, but they weren’t able to receive permission to do so. Decades after that, the plan finally realized in Italy.

05_CIncluding the work by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the “GRAND PROJECTS” exhibition presents works by 8 artists and groups such as Yusuke Asai, LUCERNE FESTIVAL ARK NOVA, Tatzu Nishi, Dani Karavan. Asai’s murals, using mud as well as other materials, sometimes take dozens of hours to complete; LUCERNE FESTIVAL ARK NOVA is a gigantic balloon dome which can accommodate 500 people when inflated. Tatzu Nishi has been building living rooms and bedrooms in unexpected places such as on the church roof, using the statue of the angel standing there as the decoration for the room. Dani Karavan has been making land sculptures that are as large as a few hundred meters, or several kilo-meters even.

Why do they work on such “grand” scales? Their answers are varied. What drives the projects of Christo and Jeanne-Claude is their simple desire: “we want to see them ourselves.” Tatzu Nishi says that he “wants to stimulate people’s perception, by encouraging them to think with their own body.” Their extraordinary idea and projects will move viewers and after the encounter they feel something different. These projects will give the sense of hope and boldness to those who see.
