Asian Art Award 2017 supported by Warehouse TERRADA
Discover the artists from Asia to go out on the international scene
There are many artists in Asia and Japan who have the potential to become the leading force in the world. The award for contemporary art “Asian Art Award supported by Warehouse TERRADA” was founded to actively support such emerging talents.
To begin the selection process, 5 young curators were asked to choose 5 artists (groups) based in Japan, and among the artists 5 finalists are selected. The finalists were announced at ART FAIR TOKYO 2017 in March: Akihiko Taniguchi, Tomona Matsukawa, Takayuki Yamamoto, Chikako Yamashiro and contact Gonzo.
Akihiko Taniguchi was born in 1983 and works in various fields including media art; Tomona Matsukawa, born 1987, creates paintings that, through the depiction of everyday life scenes, suggest arrogance and loneliness of contemporary society; Takayuki Yamamoto, born 1974, has been seeking the ways of education and art through the workshops with children; Chikako Yamashiro, born 1976 in Okinawa, has been expressing the issues surrounding her homeland through video and photographic works; and contact Gonzo, founded in 2006, is the artist collective known for their performance involving the aggressive crashing of each other’s body.
The five artists will present their new or semi-new works at the art space of Warehouse TERRADA this upcoming fall; the works will be examined by 7 jury members including Yuji Akimoto, the director of The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, then the Grand Prize winner will be announced. The Grand Prize winner will receive the monetary prize and the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition in Singapore in January 2018 as well as at Art Fair Tokyo 2018 in March. As the process is updated and it will be announced on “Asian Art Award 2017 supported by Warehouse TERRADA” website.
The Award aimed to become international art award, by including Asian artists, not only Japanese, for the nomination. It is expected to become internationally known award to discover talents in and from Asia in the near future.
